The Policy Summary

Our accessibility policy spells out our approach to handling disability and how we facilitate people with disabilities to cope with and access goods and services. We are guided by the belief that our premises, services, products, and equipment should, without exception, be available to all people. This includes those with disability challenges and to whom we must demonstrate sensitivity to individual needs, humanity, and equity

The policy also seeks to communicate and address the unique needs of people with disabilities in conformity with legal and international best practices.

Application

This policy applies to all our current and future staff, as well as to visitors and clients, including workers on contract, who may be functionally constrained by one or the other form of disability.

Provision Highlights

Disability in this context is as defined by the Human Rights Code:

  • Any degree of a physical disability that obstructs optimum bodily function, occasioning dependence on external movement support appliances or devices like a wheelchair
  • Physical impairment or injury that undermines the victim’s routine activities
  • Any impairment that affects faculty of speech, hearing, sight or mental health
  • Any condition that necessitates regular medication or healthcare

The above is just a guiding framework; other conditions would be considered for inclusion on their own merit subject to prevailing national policies and the company’s judgment or circumstances.

Major Components of Accessibility

Communication for all

Our employees are sensitized to professionally interact and communicate with everyone irrespective of their disabilities. Where and when communication is limited, different communication methods will be deployed and alternative formats provided taking into account every person’s best interest and uniqueness.

Support animals

Service animals are allowed on company premises except where this conflicts with other legal or company policies, in which case there will be proper communication to that effect.

Support Persons

Persons who support people with disabilities are allowed to accompany them anywhere on the premises, and the employees will treat them with requisite sensitivity and professionalism.

Emergency Information and Response

Employees with disabilities will be furnished with emergency response information, and their consent will be sought to share such information, or part thereof, with select staff or the Human Resource Office.

Walking Aids and Other Devices

External devices used by people with disabilities are permissible in our company premises. Such may include wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, etc., and the company will strive to make the workplace safe for its use and storage. This will be reflected in the design of offices, walkways, and utilities such as washrooms.

These guidelines shall be under constant review to reflect new and emerging national policies and trends. We encourage continuous feedback on their implementation and any views on how they can be improved are always invited.
